Job Summary:

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is seeking a Microbiologist I in our Necropsy/Histology Department. This position functions within a team of microbiologists and students to perform duties in each of the 3 Pathology subsections: Necropsy, Histology, and transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE). The main tasks for this position include, but are not limited to; performing and reporting testing and assays, quality assurance/quality control, necropsy assistance, and histological duties. The employee in this position should demonstrate clear communication, a high level of attention to detail, the ability to multitask and prioritize, accountability, and be a trustworthy and reliable individual. The successful applicant for this position will be interested in learning about animal anatomy, disease diagnostics, forensic casework, histological techniques and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) & immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing. Responsibilities:

Performs testing services within a microbiology laboratory including human, animal, and plant diagnostics, surveillance, screening, environmental monitoring, and forensic science to report clear and concise testing results.
  • 35% Performs, interprets, and reports microbiological tests or assays for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of illnesses or determine sources of contamination in the environment
  • 20% Prepares specimens for scientific examination and analysis and/or prepares the laboratory for accreditation audits/inspections
  • 5% Conducts biological research experiments employing quality control and quality assurance practices and adhering to regulatory standards and requirements
  • 10% Operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation and information management systems
  • 10% Prepares, reviews, verifies, and reports test result data
  • 5% Prepares technical reports
  • 5% Communicates with internal and external stakeholders as needed
  • 5% Supports and/or trains new employees, students, and other professional colleagues
  • 5% Participates in educational and outreach activities and other professional development

Tasks:

  • Comply with WVDL safety and quality requirements.
  • Necropsy: Perform supply management, case setup, necropsy assistance, referral coordination, clean-up overall tidiness, specimen storage and retention, carcass/tissue disposal, tissue trimming knowledge and accuracy.
  • Tissue digester: Load, operate, clean-out and reporting run data according to standard operation procedures (SOP).
  • TSE ELISA: Perform BSE and chronic waste disease (CWD) tissue preparation, ELISA testing, result reporting, sample retention and disposal according to SOP.
  • TSE IHC: Perform CWD, Scrapie, and RAMALT tissue preparation, IHC testing, result reporting, sample retention and disposal according to SOP.
  • Utilize time management and prioritization skills to assist teammates in accomplishing daily/weekly workload and goals.
  • Histology: Perform tissue embedding, sectioning, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and cover slipping. Utilize LIMS database according.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100% It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Regular business hours are 7:45am - 4:30pm.

Salary:

Minimum $49,386 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications
